Moving Home? Your Home Movers Checklist- Part Two

Following on from part one of our home movers checklist where we provided details on what you should be doing one month, three weeks and a fortnight before your move, it’s time to take a look at what should be done in the week leading up to moving day. Starting with one week before moving day, let’s see what things need to be ticked off your checklist next;

1 Week Before the Move

  • Make all of your friends and family aware of your new address to avoid any confusion at a later date.

  • Cancel any accounts or change the address details you have with any local delivery services, such as newspapers and milk; also informing them of the date you wish the service to cease.

The Day Before the Move

  • Finish your packing apart from the essentials you will require the following day.

  • Make sure all valuables and documentation are gathered together and kept in a safe place.

  • Get some extra cash out to deal with any unexpected expenses on moving day.

  • Clearly label anything that is not coming with you and, if possible, put all these items together in one place, whilst also taking down any TV aerials or satellite dishes that will be moving to your new property.

  • Defrost, clean and dry your fridge and freezer, in addition to making sure any lids on jars of food moving with you are tightened to avoid spillage.

  • Prepare any pot plants for the move by adding cane supports and storing in polythene bags.

  • Should items such as gas bottles need to be moved, arrange separate transportation?

The Day of the Move

  • Takedown curtains and take up any rugs or carpet that you are moving with you.

  • Make sure the valuables and documents you gathered together the previous day are transported with you to your new home.

  • Should your belongings be going into storage for a period of time, make sure you have removed the essentials such as driving licence documentation and passports.

  • Before the removal lorry leaves, check that nothing has been forgotten and also ensure nothing has been loaded on in error.

  • Give your removals team the address of your new property and a contact number that they can call you on if any problems arise on the route.

  • Make sure all doors and windows are locked and the house is fully secure before you hand over your keys to the estate agent.

  • Attempt to arrive at the new property before the removals team so you can let them in and direct them as to where your boxes and effects need to go.

Both this post and our previous post should now provide you with a comprehensive checklist to follow in the month leading up to your big move so you can not only make the process more straightforward but also as stress-free as possible.
